Last day in Sri Lanka and my life was changed by Geoffrey Bawa.
I had the privilege of visiting what I consider to be his magnum opus, “Lunuganga”, his private country retreat in Bentota. Started in 1947, this was truly Architect Bawa’s grandest labor of love.
Just walking through it’s five hectares (out of 27), one can really begin to understand the way he saw architecture and how it would and should fit into nature. Everything about the property is stunning to say the least. Bawa really knew how the eye and the body moved through space. Every corner was a perfectly balanced composition. Not a bad angle anywhere.
A garden as a piece of heritage and as a tourist attraction. Every Filipino student taking up architecture must look up this man and study his life and architecture. MUST.
Thanks for the inspiration, Señor Bawa. Till the next time.
